Freed-Hardeman University’s campus can be counted amongst the safest in America, according to the most recent Niche online rankings. The recently published list of Niche Best Colleges ranks FHU as #1 in the state of Tennessee and #22 in the nation for Safest College Campuses in America.
“What a blessing to live in a safe community. The safety and well-being of the people you love is always a high priority,” FHU President David R. Shannon stated. “This is another reason parents send their most treasured possessions, their children, to Freed-Hardeman. FHU has a highly equipped department of officers on campus around the clock, and the local police and sheriff departments are within a few blocks of campus. We are thankful FHU has been recognized as one of the safest campuses in the nation, but we stay alert because we care about our FHU family.”
Niche is a comprehensive online resource that aims to connect students and families to their top choices in schools through an examination of categories such as academics, athletics, student life, value and safety. Data specifically concerning campus safety is collected from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education, the FBI Uniform Crime Report, the CDC and reviews by both current and former students. Freed-Hardeman was awarded an A+ rating for overall safety, and 96% of student responders said that they felt extremely safe and secure on campus.
TJ Kirk, vice president of student services, attributes this rating to a combination of fortunate location and dedicated service. “We certainly aren’t perfect, but being in a small town really helps,” Kirk said. “Officer Brackin [director of campus safety and security] does all he can to make sure the students and staff on this campus are as safe as possible.”
The mission of Freed-Hardeman University is to help students develop their God-given talents for His glory by empowering them with an education that integrates Christian faith, scholarship and service. With locations in Henderson and Memphis, FHU offers associate, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and doctoral degrees.
