Henderson, Tennessee — (Dec. 13, 2023) — Combining competitive gaming with Christian values, FHU announces the introduction of its Esports program, set to debut in the 2024-25 academic year. The university is eager to welcome students to participate in organized competitive gaming, a rapidly growing field.
Under the guidance of Coach Greg Maxwell, the FHU Esports program will initially begin with at least 20 students and a graduate assistant, with plans to expand to accommodate up to 60 students in the future. Scholarships will be available for eligible participants, making Esports an attractive option for students seeking to further their education in a Christian environment, Maxwell said.
“As we embark on this exciting journey of introducing Esports to Freed-Hardeman University, our primary focus is not just on competition but also on upholding Christian values,” Maxwell said. “We aim to provide students with a platform where they can excel in a rapidly growing field while staying true to their faith and character.”
The Esports program will focus on video games that adhere to age-appropriate ratings (E for Everyone or Teen), ensuring alignment with FHU’s Christian values. FHU’s Esports team will compete in various games, including titles like League of Legends, Super Smash Brothers, Rocket League and Overwatch. The program’s inclusion of a variety of games aims to cater to diverse interests within the Esports community.
Maxwell said the university sees the benefits of joining the Esports arena. “Esports eliminates the need for travel expenses, hotels and food, since the competitions take place online,” Maxwell said. “We’ll be competing with schools in the Mid-South Conference and on the national level with D1 schools.”
Esports team members will meet and practice in the lower level of Hall-Roland, which is currently undergoing renovations. It will accommodate two large computer labs and an office for Maxwell, who is currently recruiting team members.
“We’re building this program from scratch, and we’re excited to build the team that will be unique for Freed-Hardeman because it will be a co-ed team,” Maxwell said.
“This is a great opportunity to give additional students the opportunity to be a part of a great Christian environment while pursuing their talents and interests,” FHU Athletic Director Jonathan Estes added.
