Master of Arts in Teaching
An educator equipped with an M.A.T. degree from FHU is guaranteed to make a transformative impact in education. Equipped with advanced expertise in your licensure area, research methods, development psychology, instructional theory and design, and much more, you’ll stand out as leaders in your school, district, and industry. From classroom management to instructional design, you’ll be prepared to shape the future of PK-12 education!
This M.A.T. program can take from 15-24 months to complete, during which all M.A.T. students are required to complete a core set of classes. Afterward, students can emphasize in one of the following areas: Pre-K, K-5, 6-12, K-12 Art, K-12 Music, or K-12 P.E.

Master of Arts in Special Education
An educator equipped with an MAT in Special Education degree from FHU is guaranteed to make a transformative impact in education, specifically in a special education classroom. Equipped with advanced expertise in your licensure area and courses in developmental psychology, teaching students with disabilities, application in special education, and much more, you’ll stand out as a leader in your school, district, and community. You’ll be prepared to shape the future of special education!
This M.A.T. program in Special Education can take as little 24 months to complete, during which all M.A.T. students are required to complete a core set of classes. Afterward, students can emphasize in one of the following areas: K-8 Interventionist, 6-12 Interventionist, or K-12 Comprehensive.

Master of Science in School Counseling
Prepare yourself to be a skilled and knowledgeable helper in the school counseling setting with the Master of Science in School Counseling (M.S.) program at Freed-Hardeman University. Begin a new adventure that integrates elements of the counseling and education professions with principles of the Christian faith.
At Freed-Hardeman University, students enrolled in our M.S. in School Counseling program will gain important knowledge and skills to become an impactful and empathetic leader in the counseling field specifically in the school setting. Anticipate a comprehensive journey encompassing counseling and training in the school setting, upon successful completion of the program, leads to Tennessee licensure as a school counselor for K-12 schools.

To be considered for admission into the M.S. in School Counseling program at FHU, please submit the following:

- Must have the equivalent of 12 semester hours in Behavioral
- Science (Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Anthropology, Family Studies) at the undergraduate level with a minimum GPA of 3.00
- Submit an essay of personal goals and how FHU will contribute to those goals (300-500 words).

This M.Ed program in Special Education can take as little as 5 semesters to complete (Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall, Spring) to complete.
The Master of Arts in Teaching program (MAT) is for individuals wishing to pursue initial teaching licensure. All of our M.Ed. students are already licensed and working in the education sector. If you already hold an active teaching license and are seeking to gain advanced training in education, this M.Ed. program is for you!

Master of Education in Instructional Leadership
Advance your career with a Master in Education in Instructional Leadership. This new adventure will give you the coursework and experience needed to advance in the administration sector of education. You’ll learn from experts in their field about research methods, school business management, administration, leadership theories, and more!
This M.Ed program consists of 36 credit hours to complete.
The licensure-only track consists of 21 credit hours and is for students who already have an M.Ed but need their Instructional Leadership Licensure. Students interested in this track must meet the same entrance and exit requirements as those in the M.Ed. program.

Learn More About Administrative Courses and Licensures
Exit Requirements:
- Successful completion of the above coursework with a 3.00 GPA and any other requirements for the M.Ed. degree.
- Completion of all courses within a six–year period. Upon enrolling in EDU 601 Foundations of School Administration and Supervision, ILL candidates will complete a field experience proposal. The minimum time for ILL candidates to complete the field experience is three (3) semesters. The maximum time to complete the field experience is three (3) years.
- Passage of the Instructional Leadership Praxis 6990.
- Exit interview with the Program Director of Instructional Leadership will include ensuring that candidate’s field experience artifacts demonstrate the required competencies outlined in the Tennessee Instructional Leadership Standards (TILS).
Master of Education in Literacy, Emphasis in English as a Second Language
An educator equipped with an M.Ed. in Literacy degree from FHU is guaranteed to make a transformative impact in education, specifically in the ESL classroom. You’ll be equipped with advanced expertise in foundations of language, ESL instruction, literacy methods, and much more!
This M.Ed program can take as little as 15 months to complete.
For those that already have a master’s degree, we offer two separate endorsement areas: English as a Second Language and Reading Specialist. While the master’s program is 30 credit hours, the ESL endorsement is only 12 credit hours and the reading specialist endorsement is only 18 credit hours.

Doctor of Education
Prepare yourself with advanced training in PK-12 education with our Doctor of Education program at Freed-Hardeman University. This new adventure will expand upon your training and experience in education, equip you with advanced leadership skills, and allow you to become an expert on a specific topic through the completion of a dissertation.
All students in the Ed.D. program will complete a rigorous research-based dissertation that integrates theory and research in the study of instructional leadership. The primary goal of the dissertation is to generate knowledge that contributes to the understanding of instructional educational practices, policies, or reforms. The dissertation is a significant scholarly work that uses rigorous research methods in the study of educational problems and practices and the application of problem-solving strategies.
This M.Ed program consists of 57 credit hours to complete, which can take about 3.5 years.
